A few observations heading into the semis

Magnificent Seven 3 Maxis, 1 Five O, no JG or MTF's

Unfortunate Five Just Pete from the JG

Worst win/loss records, Pete and Hesi from the JG

Best win record, John from Five O

How on earth is it a JG/MTF final

Further to this

Perhaps PJ, time to look at the McIntyre system for the playoffs.

So, in a 2 round robin, 8 team comp, each side is effectively playing for it's 1-8 placing, and the glory of the minor premiership.

It means an extra 2 weeks, but to a larger extent, eliminates the sudden death aspect for teams that have earned their ranking

For info

Week 1

  • 4th qualifying final: 1st v 8th
  • 3rd qualifying final: 2nd v 7th
  • 2nd qualifying final: 3rd v 6th
  • 1st qualifying final: 4th v 5th

The organisation of the rest of the finals series is dependent upon whether teams won or lost in week 1 and their final ranking on the ladder before the finals. The two lowest-ranked losers are eliminated from the finals, while the two highest-ranked winners progress straight to week 3.

Week 2

  • 1st semi final: 4th highest-ranked winner v 2nd highest-ranked loser
  • 2nd semi final: 3rd highest-ranked winner (from week 1) v 1st highest-ranked loser (from week 1)

The two losing teams are eliminated, the two winning teams progress to week 3.

Week 3

  • 1st preliminary final: 1st highest-ranked winner (from week 1) v winner of 1st semi final
  • 2nd preliminary final: 2nd highest-ranked winner (from week 1) v winner of 2nd semi final

The two losing teams are eliminated, the two winning teams progress to week four.

Week 4

  • Grand final: winner of 1st preliminary final v winner of 2nd preliminary final

I think someone else (Ian?) had a good suggestion.  If you have 8 teams, it doesn't seem right that they all make the play-offs, so you have the top 4 make the play-offs and you add an extra week to the play-offs.

Week 1:  1st plays 2nd - winner advance to the grand final.  3rd plays 4th - loser is eliminated.

Week 2:  Loser of 1st vs 2nd plays winner of 3rd vs 4th for a spot in the final

Week 3: Final

In this way the top 2 teams get a life.  Having said that the current system works ok too and has stood the test of time.  Agree there is no advantage for the top 2 teams, but it just means teams have to step up in the semi finals.  Speaking of which, well done team JG - deserved winners yesterday, and apologies skipper for a poor showing - you must have sore shoulders by now.

Yeah it was me

I also agree the current system has stood the test of time, so not to worried either way

Congratulations to the Gang and WTF gonna be a cracker of a final well deserved on getting this far

Hard luck Max beaten by a sub, unfortunately there is no right answer

Five Oh I think you guys would have won had the Brisbane Carnival still been going, Flemington arrrgh

Unfortunately you have to deal with the cards that are dealt, and JG and MTF got the job done

Enjoy next week

Hesi, I have tried the Macintyre system before and I believe it is a good one (although it did attract criticism) but the 8 team version is just too long to resolve. The 5 team version may be a possibility in future. The straight semi-Final/Grand Final system I have used this time can be cruel as the two top performing teams found out yesterday but it also gives some a chance to play in a GF that they might not otherwise get often and keeps everyone's interest up for the next comp. Whoever wins next Saturday will deserve it believe me !

It's a bit like the FA Cup - one bad match and you're out.

The 'MTF' master-plan coming together nicely even at this very early stage.

Steady ...find our feet ...... then POUNCE !

You never used to see 'Winx' lead up too often either. So we're in very good company.

But come the home straight ! 🙂
